GTA Online Is Shutting Down Support for the Rockstar Editor on PS4 and Xbox One

From GTA BOOM Wiki

Despite the limitations faced by the older consoles, Rockstar Games remains committed to providing updates for Grand Theft Auto Online.

Rockstar Games has announced that it will discontinue support for the Rockstar Editor in GTA Online on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This change will take effect on February 20, marking a significant moment for the decade-old game as Rockstar effectively admits it has begun to reach the limits of what's technically feasible on the older generation consoles.

The Rockstar Editor, first introduced in 2015, is a creative tool that allows players to record, edit, and share gameplay footage from both Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online. The feature has been instrumental in enabling players to create and upload their short films and clips, utilizing the game's environment and characters. This includes the capability to arrange clips, apply filters, add music and text, and other editing functions, allowing players to produce their own mini-movies using the game's engine.

In a recent post on their website, Rockstar stated that removing the Rockstar Editor from PS4 and Xbox One is a necessary step to ensure the ongoing stability and the addition of new content to GTA Online on these platforms. The company emphasized that this update would help keep the PS4 and Xbox One updated with additional GTA Online DLC for as long as possible.

However, this removal will also lead to the deletion of all clips and projects created on the aforementioned platforms. Players interested in preserving their work are advised to export their projects before the February 20 deadline. More detailed instructions for this process are available on the Rockstar support page. It is important to note that this won't affect players on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, where the Rockstar Editor will remain available.

This announcement comes amidst a broader context of Rockstar's plans for the future, which includes Grand Theft Auto 6. While the company is focusing on newer generations of consoles and PCs, they're still committed to supporting GTA Online on older platforms. The removal of the Rockstar Editor is part of this larger strategy to balance the advancement of the game with the technical constraints of the previous-generation consoles.

This change is expected to affect a huge chunk of the existing GTA Online population.

For players still playing on older platforms, this development signifies a gradual shift towards the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. Nevertheless, Rockstar's commitment to maintaining GTA Online updates on these consoles provides some reassurance that players on these platforms can continue to enjoy the game for the foreseeable future.
