Former GTA Dev Believes Rockstar Can't Be Certain About a 2025 Release for GTA 6

From GTA BOOM Wiki

Rushing a $2 billion game that you've been developing for the last decade is not a wise move, and Rockstar knows this.

Few titles in the world of video game development have generated as much speculation and anticipation as Grand Theft Auto 6. Fans and industry watchers alike have been eagerly awaiting its release, but recent discussions have raised an intriguing question: Can Rockstar Games really be certain about hitting their 2025 release target?

Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar developer, recently shared some insights on X (formerly Twitter) concerning the company's decision-making process. According to Vermeij, "The decision to delay GTA IV was made 4 months or so before the original release date. Any further and it's hard to make the call."

This revelation is particularly interesting when applied to GTA 6. Vermeij suggests that Rockstar "is probably not in a position to determine whether they will hit 2025 until May-ish." Going by this, we might not have any concrete proof about any changes to the release schedule until early next year.

One of the key factors in Rockstar's decision-making process is their commitment to quality. As Vermeij puts it, "GTA VI will sell for 10+ years and there is no competition to worry about. They are not going to release the game until they're 100% happy with it. No matter what it said in the trailer."

This dedication to perfection is both a blessing and a curse.

On one hand, it ensures that fans will receive a polished, high-quality title, which is becoming something of a rarity these days. On the other hand, it introduces an element of uncertainty into the release timeline, which does not sit well with GTA fans who've been waiting for a new mainline entry since 2013.

Rockstar's history with delays should also be factored in to the current situation. Both GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 experienced considerable delays after their initial announcements, each being pushed back by about a year. Obviously, GTA 6 being delayed is not out of the question.

Although Rockstar has the luxury of time when it comes to development, there are financial considerations at play. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, has positioned GTA 6 as a major revenue driver for their fiscal year 2026. Any unexpected delays could potentially impact their financial projections and stock performance.

With rumors suggesting a development budget as high as $2 billion, GTA 6 is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious gaming projects ever undertaken. It stands to reason that such a massive scale brings with it increased complexity and potential for unforeseen challenges, which could contribute to delays.

Industry insiders have also been cautiously optimistic about the 2025 release date. Jason Schreier, a respected gaming journalist, recently reported that after speaking with six Rockstar developers, none had heard anything about a delay. Still, he was careful not to completely rule out the possibility.

Take-Two and Rockstar have already dangled GTA 6 like a carrot in front of investors and gamers. Now they must deal with the pressure to meet the announced 2025 release date and satisfy any financial projections. How they go about it is entirely up to them, but given the years of painstaking effort and steadfast dedication they've committed to creating GTA 6, we reckon the result will be worth our time.
