Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar developer, recently shared some insights on X (formerly Twitter) concerning the company's decision-making process. According to Vermeij, "The decision to delay GTA IV was made 4 months or so before the original release date. Any further and it's hard to make the call."
This revelation is particularly interesting when applied to GTA 6. Vermeij suggests that Rockstar "is probably not in a position to determine whether they will hit 2025 until May-ish." Going by this, we might not have any concrete proof about any changes to the release schedule until early next year.
One of the key factors in Rockstar's decision-making process is their commitment to quality. As Vermeij puts it, "GTA VI will sell for 10+ years and there is no competition to worry about. They are not going to release the game until they're 100% happy with it. No matter what it said in the trailer."
This dedication to perfection is both a blessing and a curse.
On one hand, it ensures that fans will receive a polished, high-quality title, which is becoming something of a rarity these days. Although Rockstar has the luxury of time when it comes to development, there are financial considerations at play. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, has positioned GTA 6 as a major revenue driver for their fiscal year 2026. Any unexpected delays could potentially impact their financial projections and stock performance.
With rumors suggesting a development budget as high as $2 billion, GTA 6 is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious gaming projects ever undertaken.
