Rockstar Games has banned NFTs and cryptocurrency from GTA Online

From GTA BOOM Wiki

Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have made it clear that they want no part of NFTs and cryptocurrency in the latest update to the policy governing GTA Online roleplay servers.

The majority of the new policy is technical jargon, but the gist is that Rockstar wants GTA Online players to know that it will continue to support roleplay servers and hope that they "thrive in a safe and friendly way".

The changes also clarify that Rockstar doesn't want people to associate GTA Online with anything that links the GTA brand with NFTs and cryptocurrency.

Rockstar didn't explain what prompted the policy change, but it's almost certainly linked to a recent press release announcing the sales of an NFT and offering access to an exclusive GTA Online RP server.

Considering that this isn't the first time this has happened, Rockstar and Take-Two decided to err on the side of caution and prevent things from escalating.

Rockstar Games has done an excellent job with supporting GTA Online and making sure that its community stays engaged at all times.

It's easy to see how letting situations like this go on could be taken as Rockstar supporting NFTs and cryptocurrency. By drawing a line, Rockstar and Take-Two have made it clear that it doesn't want people to take advantage of the success of GTA Online, as is their right.

Rockstar has spent years cultivating the GTA brand. Gamers don't have the best opinion on NFTs and cryptocurrency, so it's understandable why the developers didn't want to risk any more controversy with minimal to no rewards.

GTA Online is still going strong after surviving a disastrous launch phase. Since GTA 6 is still likely years away, Rockstar will want to keep on supporting GTA Online until GTA 6 is out if only to use it as a way to sustain itself as it experiments with potential new features for the incoming GTA game like fast-travel.
