Rockstar Games and Grand Theft Auto 5 dominated European sales charts in July

From GTA BOOM Wiki

The ever-dynamic gaming industry has witnessed several big titles come and go over the years, but it seems certain classics just refuse to fade into the annals of history.

Grand Theft Auto 5, a title that will soon celebrate its 10th anniversary, has outperformed newer game releases for the nth time, topping sales charts across Europe for July.

According to the GSD data, which incorporates digital sales from a majority of AAA game publishers across every European nation and physical sales in major markets, 11.6 million console and PC games found their way into the hands of European gamers in July. This is an upswing of 34% compared to the same month last year.

GTA 5 is a timeless classic that may even sell well even after GTA 6 comes out.

Delving into the nuances, digital downloads, a fast-growing segment, contributed a whopping 7.9 million to this figure, showing a 60% hike. On the other hand, physical sales, which amounted to 3.75 million, saw a marginal 0.2% uptick.

Now, when we zoom into the individual titles that made this surge possible, the enduring charm of Rockstar Games' GTA 5 becomes unmistakably evident. Despite being almost a decade old, it emerged as the crown jewel in Europe's game sales for July. With over 185 million units sold globally since its release, GTA 5's ongoing appeal is a testament to its gripping gameplay, storyline, and the periodic discounts that ensure its affordability in a day and age where companies charge a premium for newer games like Diablo 4 and Hogwarts Legacy.

While GTA 5 comfortably occupied the top spot, EA's FIFA 23 was hot on its heels at the second place, with another Rockstar classic, Red Dead Redemption 2, sealing the third place. The latter, which has sold over 55 million units worldwide, also benefited from discounts, especially on platforms like PlayStation and Xbox. These summer promotions undeniably had a transformative impact on the gaming charts.

Away from these titans, Nintendo's Pikmin 4, the highest-ranking new release, made its debut at the 11th spot. Although this position may appear modest, Pikmin 4 experienced an 81% sales boost in its first two weeks compared to its predecessor, Pikmin 3: Deluxe, which debuted in October 2020.

From the realm of games to hardware, the PlayStation 5 emerged as the undisputed leader. European gamers snagged a total of 493,000 consoles in July, 62.5% more than the previous year. While this is marginally less than June's figures, the PS5's sales trajectory paints a vivid picture: a year-on-year growth of 244% and a 24% increase from June 2023, influenced by tantalizing price promotions. Although Nintendo Switch trailed behind, holding the second spot, its sales experienced a 9% dip compared to July 2022.

It's easy to see a world where both GTA 5 and GTA 6 can top the sales charts.

Reflecting on this data, several intriguing questions arise: How long will GTA 5's reign be? With GTA 6's release looming on the horizon (hinted to beat any point between April 2024 and March 2025), will its predecessor's awe-inspiring sales legacy continue? And as digital downloads rapidly overshadow physical sales, how will this reshape the gaming industry's future?

One thing is certain: the video game industry in Europe, fueled by classics and promising new titles alike, shows no signs of slowing down. The impending release of GTA 6 might just be the next monumental wave that takes the charts by storm.
