GTA V's PC Port Almost Went The Way Of RDR
Oh, Red Dead Redemption. A game by Rockstar Games which was always coveted by PC players, but our calls were never heeded. Red Dead Redemption, an old relic of the previous generation, which never left the enclosure of consoles. Red Dead Redemption, with is basically just Grand Theft Horse, was the subject of many a petition, many a forum post, many an open letter.
Red Dead Redemption, the game which never came to PC.
You'd imagine that despite it not ever actually happening, that with all the public demand, development on a PC port was at least considered by Rockstar. However recently Kris Roberts, a former Rockstar employee that worked on RDR as Lead Multiplayer Designer, made a statement about the status of the much desired Red Dead Redemption PC port during a Twitch live stream.
I don't think there was ever an intention to have a PC version of Red Dead Redemption.
He goes on to speak of his surprise at GTA V having a PC port.
I was actually really shocked that they did a PC version of Grand Theft Auto V.
Think about that. No Rockstar Editor, no GTA V mods. Actually, no, don't think about it, you'd probably be better off having a staring contest with Cthulhu.
Swinging back to Red Dead Redemption, Roberts elaborates about how console centric the whole development process was.
Obviously in development, we were all PC based and had it running for one or two clients for the entire development. But as far as the licensing for the consoles and stuff, it was pretty much always going to be an X360 and PS3 title… we never really seriously talked about optimizing it for PC.
Now, as much of a shame it is that Red Dead Redemption never made it to PC, it would have been that much more of shame if GTA V would have also stayed restricted to living room gaming.
How do you feel about the lack of a Red Dead Redemption PC port?
