GTA 5 Still Dominates PS Store, Somehow
This isn't ever going to stop, is it? Grand Theft Auto 5 has reached a point of critical mass after which everyone who enjoys video games will just gravitate towards it, and even then, some people who don't. Six years after launch, GTA 5 still managed to top the download list of the PlayStation Store for the month of December 2019, edging out major AAA titles in the process.
GTA 5 beat FIFA 20 and the latest war crime simulator Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare, both of which were top downloads the month before, with Tekken 7 being a newcomer and taking the 4th position. The list is studded with other huge blockbusters as well and we're frankly quite surprised they didn't outperform GTA 5.
Take, for example, both Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Battlefront 2. December saw the premier of Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker, the immensely anticipated finale of the so-called "Skywalker Saga" consisting of all numbered films in the mass-media titan. Fallen Order is the first single-player focused game since EA got the license, and Battlefront 2 had just released an entirely new "ultimate" edition as well as content featuring designs and locations of The Rise of Skywalker, and these games were still less popular than GTA 5!
That said, GTA 5 had plenty going for it as well. In December, GTA Online got its biggest DLC of the year with the Casino Heist, fulfilling a long-held fan dream. The fact that the Diamond Casino DLC fulfilled another long-held fan dream of the in-game casino opening its doors, now being able to rob the place put the game on a lot of new radars — and it figures that plenty of new players picked it up for the holidays!
We certainly hope GTA 5 and Online bring this energy into 2020 as well, and continue to cultivate a large and active community. See you in Los Santos!
